Our society is often ‘running on empty,’ addicted to coffee and caffeine in all its forms. We use it to get us going in the morning and often throughout the day to keep us alert at work. A recent news article says sleep deprived doctors in Australia have been ordered to drink up to six cups of coffee a day to stay awake during extended shifts. (Reuters, Canberra). Yet many people fail to realize that too much caffeine will make a person’s health worse, by stressing the adrenal glands. The average North American ( and this probably includes Australians as well) consumes 150 to 225 mg of caffeine daily, which is about the amount of 1-2 cups of coffee. Multiply that by six times and you’re consuming a lot of caffeine.
